SAFE RESPONSE
Confirm there is no danger, stop charging through an authorized control, secure and unlock the vehicle, support the cable and attempt only a straight, non-forcing release.
Stop immediately when the scene is not safe.
Do not touch the vehicle, connector or charger when there is smoke, fire, arcing, a burning smell, abnormal heat, exposed conductors, collision damage or water ingress. Keep people away, contact the site operator and follow local emergency-service instructions. Do not open the charger, operate unverified disconnects or attempt live testing.
Use this ordered release sequence.
- End the session. Use the station Stop control, operator app or RFID, or the vehicle interface. Confirm the charger and vehicle show charging stopped or session complete, then wait a few seconds for the lock to disengage.
- Secure the vehicle. Put it in Park and use the vehicle manufacturer's normal method to unlock the vehicle and charge port.
- Remove cable side-load. Support a heavy cable. If the connector is under tension, gently push it straight toward the inlet to relieve load on the latch.
- Use the normal release. Operate the handle or vehicle release and pull straight out. Never twist, lever, lubricate or use pliers, screwdrivers or improvised tools.
- Escalate instead of guessing. If it remains locked, contact the site operator or vehicle manufacturer. Use a manual release only when charging is confirmed stopped and the exact make, model, model year and market owner's manual gives that procedure.
Why one universal “emergency release” instruction is unsafe.
Vehicle procedures differ. Tesla's current Model Y manual, for example, places conditions and warnings around its own release cable, including confirming that the vehicle is not actively charging and not pulling the release cable while removing the charging cable. Those instructions apply to the specified Model Y manual and must not be copied to another vehicle. ChargePoint likewise directs users to the EV owner's manual and warns never to force the connector or use tools.
After a manual release, visible damage or repeated sticking, take the affected inlet or connector out of normal use until the responsible operator, vehicle manufacturer or qualified service provider has reviewed it.
What an operator should record.
- Site, charger and connector identity
- Vehicle make, model, model year and market
- Exact vehicle, station or app message
- Session state before and after the authorized stop
- Whether vehicle unlock and cable support changed the condition
- Any heat, damage, contamination, water, smoke or arcing
- Whether the problem is recurring or affects multiple vehicles
This evidence helps separate a vehicle-side charge-port lock from a station-side connector problem. An OCPP 1.6 ConnectorLockFailure is a standardized fault category, not a universal root-cause diagnosis or permission for a mechanical release.
