“Connector lock fault” is being used for a vehicle latch, a station socket, a rigid handle and an OCPP message as though they were the same failure.
SAFE RESPONSE
Separate the visible symptom from the reporting layer, stop unsafe retries and assign the next action to the vehicle owner, station operator or qualified service team.
Stop before triage when there is a hazard.
Do not touch or reconnect equipment with smoke, fire, arcing, a burning smell, abnormal heat, exposed conductors, collision damage, water ingress or visible connector damage. Keep people away and contact the site operator and local emergency services. Do not open an energized cabinet, bypass a lock or interlock, change protection settings, or perform live testing.
Step 1: identify what is physically retaining the connector.
- Vehicle inlet: end the authorized session, secure and unlock the vehicle, support cable weight and follow the exact vehicle manual. Never pry the connector out.
- Station socket or holster: do not force the station mechanism. Record the charger and connector identity and follow the exact charger operator or service manual.
- Will not lock or start: confirm there is no damage or contamination and that the session is stopped. One ordinary reseat may be attempted only when the exact equipment instructions permit it; otherwise use another safe connector and escalate.
- Unknown location: do not assign a failed part. Record where the plug is held, the exact message and the session state first.
Step 2: keep the screen message and OCPP data separate.
Open Charge Alliance describes OCPP 1.6 StatusNotification with a standardized errorCode plus optional free-format info and vendorErrorCode fields. ConnectorLockFailure reports failure to lock or unlock a connector, but it does not authorize a mechanical release or identify a replaceable part by itself.
Do not copy a vehicle DTC, charger-screen code, OCPP 1.6 category, OCPP 2.0.1 event or manufacturer vendorErrorCode into one universal code table. Record the source and wording exactly.
Step 3: decide whether one normal retry is allowed.
A retry is not appropriate when there is damage, contamination, a danger sign, an active or unknown charging state, or a recurring fault. Where there is no visible damage, charging is confirmed stopped and the exact manufacturer instructions allow it, an operator may fully seat the connector once and retry the normal authorization sequence without added force. If it does not latch correctly, stop and mark that connector unavailable.
ABB's A400 manual illustrates why model scope matters: its “Unable to lock” and “Unable to unlock” messages have model-specific actions, and it separately notes that some vehicles control the connector lock. Those instructions support evidence-first triage for that ABB model; they are not universal repair instructions.
Evidence that shortens service escalation.
- Site, charger asset ID and connector or EVSE number
- Exact screen or app wording and its source
- OCPP version, status,
errorCode,infoandvendorErrorCode, when available - Timestamp and time zone, session or transaction reference
- Vehicle make, model, model year, market and connector standard
- Whether the fault is first-time, recurring, or seen across multiple vehicles
- External condition photos only when it is safe to take them
Keep payment-card data, passwords, access tokens, personal identification and vehicle VINs out of shared incident records.
