EV chargers in heat and dust: buy sustained output, not just a nameplate

A depot can have enough grid capacity and still miss its charging schedule if the equipment's usable output does not match the conditions at the site. For buyers evaluating exposed car parks, dusty access roads or busy commercial depots, the useful question is not simply “Does it work outdoors?” It is “What output, maintenance plan and documented limits apply to this exact configuration here?”

This is a procurement checklist, not an installation design, thermal-test procedure or guarantee of environmental suitability. Use qualified local professionals and manufacturer-approved, model-specific instructions. Never obstruct cooling openings, open energized equipment, bypass protection or improvise cooling modifications.

1. Separate the temperature limit from the output promise

Ask for three distinct answers: the permitted operating environment, the conditions for continuous output, and what happens when a limit is reached. A wide advertised temperature range by itself does not establish how much power the charger can sustain throughout that range.

For a concrete documentation example, Alpitronic's HYC1000 technical page lists operation from -30°C to +55°C with derating above +40°C. Those are that manufacturer's model-specific published figures, not Xiaochong specifications or universal thresholds. The procurement lesson is to request the accompanying output conditions rather than copy a temperature range into the tender.

Request the relevant curve or written limit for the quoted hardware revision, power-module arrangement, connectors and firmware. Ask whether it describes total cabinet output or one connector, and which input, output and environmental conditions were used. If the supplier cannot substantiate an important condition, mark it “unconfirmed” instead of assuming full power.

2. Describe the actual location before comparing quotations

Prepare a short exposure brief with the local technical team. Record the equipment location, expected operating periods, direct sun or proposed shade, nearby walls, adjacent equipment, dust sources and access for maintenance. Ask which local measurements or records the supplier needs; a weather-app screenshot alone is not a completed site assessment.

Where relevant, include altitude, humidity or condensation exposure and proximity to corrosive environments for the manufacturer's review. These are questions to resolve, not a declaration that one product suits every coastal, desert or high-altitude location. Storage and transport conditions also need their own confirmation; a shipping container and an operating site are not the same environment.

3. Keep footprint savings separate from cooling and service access

A slim cabinet can be useful in a constrained layout, but its physical width is not the complete installation envelope. Put the manufacturer's required spaces, door movement and service access on the same drawing as parking bays, pedestrian paths, barriers and cable routes. Resolve conflicts before ordering or installing a canopy.

Ask the supplier to review any decorative surround, enclosure, wall recess or proposed shade structure. Do not assume that an attractive enclosure is thermally neutral. No generic clearance dimension in an online article can replace the installation drawing for the selected charger and the local professional's approval.

Use the cable-reach planning tool only for preliminary geometry. It does not validate airflow, electrical protection, accessibility or construction. A successful geometric result must not be used to sign off the whole installation.

4. Make dust-related maintenance a priced responsibility

Instead of asking whether a charger is “maintenance free,” request its approved maintenance schedule, environmental exclusions and inspection criteria. Ask whether the quoted design uses filters or other cooling-system consumables, which revisions apply and who is authorized to inspect or replace them. Do not assume that all AC and DC designs use the same cooling arrangement.

The comparison should include planned labour, access arrangements, approved consumables, parts lead times and the operational effect of taking equipment out of service. A lower purchase price is not necessarily a lower operating cost if the required service capability is absent. Conversely, do not buy an oversized spare-parts package without a documented reason.

ChargePoint describes environmental testing and a trained maintenance-partner network as parts of its reliability approach. That is a useful reminder to request both equipment evidence and service capability. It is not evidence that Xiaochong has used that facility, achieved the same test results or joined that service network.

Keep the service instructions with the exact model and revision. This article deliberately provides no cleaning chemicals, internal access steps, electrical test values or universal replacement interval. Those decisions belong to approved documentation and qualified service personnel.

5. Compare output scenarios against the departure deadline

Build a conservative planning case using the supplier's documented sustained output, the site's authorized power allocation and the vehicles' charging requirements. Treat each of these as a separate possible constraint. The nameplate rating is not automatically the available fleet power during every hour of the day.

As a purely hypothetical arithmetic example, 180 kWh delivered in a three-hour window requires 60 kW average at the chosen energy-measurement boundary. If the usable sustained output at that same boundary were only 50 kW, three hours would provide at most 150 kWh before allowing for further interruptions or constraints. These are invented planning numbers, not a Xiaochong derating curve, battery forecast or equipment guarantee. If the requirement is energy stored in batteries, the site team must account for the appropriate losses and vehicle behaviour separately.

This simple gap check helps the buyer compare a different charging window, a revised configuration or a staged operating plan before defaulting to a larger order. 6. Agree what counts as acceptance evidence

Ask the supplier and installer to define a safe, authorized acceptance plan. It should identify the model and software baseline, installation conditions, relevant measurements, duration, expected behaviour and unresolved exceptions. Agree what evidence can be reviewed before shipment and what must be confirmed at the actual site.

A short demonstration on a mild day cannot establish performance throughout a hotter season. Where the required environment cannot be represented safely, retain that limitation and request appropriate manufacturer evidence. Do not deliberately block airflow, defeat alarms or force equipment beyond approved conditions to create a test.

If output later falls, preserve the session timeline, concurrent loads, recorded conditions and relevant status information. Let the qualified technical team distinguish a site limit, vehicle request, configured restriction or equipment issue. A lower screen reading alone is not proof of a thermal fault. Buyer FAQ

Does the maximum operating temperature guarantee full charging power?

No. Ask for the selected model's sustained-output curve and its stated conditions. An operating-temperature limit and a full-output limit are different procurement questions.

Can we improve cooling by opening the cabinet or adding a fan?

Do not improvise changes to the enclosure, cooling system or protection settings. Ask the manufacturer and qualified site professionals to approve the installation and service plan for the exact model.

What should a hot-site charging quotation include?

Include the documented operating conditions, output limits, approved layout, maintenance responsibilities, relevant spare parts and evidence required at acceptance. Request unresolved items in writing before ordering.
